Academic Assessment

Creative Learning Academy administers several standardized measures in order to assess the effectiveness of our curricular offerings, meet individual student needs and make adjustments to curriculum and programming when necessary.

In the early learning years, students take the Children's Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA). It is administered three times throughout the year to monitor progress in math and language skills. This helps teachers place students in appropriate instructional groups to enable efficient delivery of instruction in order to achieve maximum success in the formative years. Additionally, CPAA has reports for parents and teachers that suggest individualized, specific activities to reteach, reinforce or enrich specific skills.

In Grades 2-8, the Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP-3) is administered in the Spring of each year. The CTP is a conceptual assessment of student achievement which consists of essential standards and learning domains in English language arts, mathematics, and verbal and quantitative reasoning. The CTP is designed to measure progress for high-achieving students who have had the benefit of a rigorous academic experience. Results are referenced against national, statewide and independent school populations in order to assess the overall effectiveness of our academic programming. Students at CLA typically score in the 90% percentile with over sixty percent of 4th, 5th and 6th graders qualifying for the Duke TIP program.

In order to measure writing ability, students in Grades 3-8 participate in the WrAP writing assessment. Students respond to a writing prompt over the course of two consecutive days—which allows them to demonstrate their ability follow the writing process of drafting, revising, and completing a final version. Tests are reviewed and scored by independent evaluators and compared with student performance at other independent schools.

Middle School students participate annually in the National Spanish Examination is administered each year across the U.S. to over 160,000 students in Grades 6 -12. It is a rigorous examination sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Creative Learning Academy students have a long history of high achievement on these exams and earned a total of 19 gold, 10 silver, and 4 bronze medals in the 2016 examination.
